The organization of individual thunderstorms into a long, roughly linear band that advances as a coherent system, typically forming along or ahead of a cold front where a line of new storms is continually triggered by outflow from the storms already established. Squall lines can stretch for hundreds of kilometres and are a common source of widespread damaging straight-line winds, distinguishing them from the more localized, rotating threat of an individual supercell.
