The development of a cumulonimbus storm cell from strong, sustained atmospheric convection, requiring sufficient moisture, atmospheric instability and a lifting mechanism to carry warm, humid air rapidly upward. The resulting storm can produce heavy rain, lightning, hail, damaging winds and, under the right wind shear conditions, tornadoes.
