Tropical Cyclone Formation

The development of an intense, rotating tropical storm system, called a hurricane, typhoon or cyclone depending on the ocean basin, requiring warm ocean water, atmospheric instability, high humidity and low wind shear to organize convection around a strengthening low-pressure center. The Coriolis effect, driven by the Earth's rotation, provides the spin, which is why tropical cyclones never form directly on the equator.
