An abnormal rise in coastal sea level driven by a storm's strong onshore winds pushing water toward the coast and by the lower atmospheric pressure at a storm's center allowing the sea surface to bulge upward. Storm surge accompanying a hurricane or severe coastal storm is frequently the deadliest and most destructive element of the event, capable of inundating low-lying coastal land far beyond the reach of ordinary tides.
