Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park in the Province of Lleida is Catalonia's only national park and sits within the Pyrenees. Established in 1955 as Spain's fifth national park, it protects a core area of about 141 square kilometers with a further 267 square kilometer buffer zone, and its Catalan name, meaning roughly the winding streams and Saint Maurice lake, describes its defining features. Elevations climb from 1,600 to 3,017 meters at Besiberri Sud, and the park holds nearly 200 lakes carved out by past glaciation, along with alpine ecosystems that support Pyrenean chamois, brown bears, marmots, golden eagles, and lammergeiers. It has been a protected Ramsar wetland site since 2007.
