Alerce Andino National Park lies in the Los Lagos Region of Chile near Puerto Montt and was established on November 22, 1982, covering about 393 square kilometers between the Andes and the Reloncavi estuary. It protects roughly 200 square kilometers of ancient alerce (Fitzroya cupressoides) forest, one of the longest lived tree species known, around about 50 lakes and ponds, and its Valdivian temperate forest shelters the pudu, a small native deer, and the marsupial monito del monte.
