Alerce Costero National Park sits in the Cordillera Pelada in the Los Rios Region of Chile, roughly 137 kilometers from Valdivia. It began in 1987 as a national monument protecting a stand of ancient alerce (Fitzroya cupressoides, whose name gives the park its title of coastal alerce) and was elevated to national park status in 2010 through a partnership combining the state owned monument, the Valdivia National Reserve and land donated by the Nature Conservancy, and it now covers about 140 square kilometers of Valdivian temperate rainforest holding alerce trees thousands of years old.
