The National Marine Park of Alonnisos Northern Sporades, commonly known as the Alonnisos Marine Park, was founded in Greece by presidential decree on May 16, 1992, the first marine park of its kind in the country. It is currently the largest marine protected area in Europe, covering approximately 2,260 square kilometres of the northern Aegean Sea. Besides its sea area, the park includes the island of Alonnisos, six smaller islands, and 22 uninhabited islets and rocky outcrops.
