Amami Gunto National Park protects a chain of eight subtropical islands in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, including Amami Oshima, Tokunoshima, Kikai and Yoron, established on March 7, 2017 out of an earlier 1974 quasi-national park designation. It covers about 75,263 hectares of land and sea, protecting coral reefs, mangrove forests and tidal flats. The islands are habitat for endemic species such as the Amami rabbit and Ryukyu spiny rat, and the park forms part of a wider effort to secure UNESCO World Heritage recognition for the Amami and Okinawa island chain.
