Asinara National Park

Asinara National Park protects Asinara, the second largest island of Sardinia after Sant'Antioco, and covers about 746.53 square kilometers near the city of Porto Torres. Known historically as Isola del Diavolo, or Devil's Island, it served as a quarantine station, a prison camp during the First World War, and one of Italy's most important high-security prisons during the terrorism of the 1970s and the fight against organized crime, before its national park was established in 1998. The island supports a wide variety of habitats and is known for a population of local albino donkeys known as asinello bianco.
