Aso-Kuju National Park protects a volcanic region of Kumamoto and Oita prefectures on Kyushu, Japan, first designated in 1934 as Aso National Park and renamed in 1986 after the Kuju mountains were added, covering about 727 square kilometers. Mount Aso is one of the largest active volcanoes and calderas in the world, its landscape shaped by eruptions roughly 270,000 years ago. The park combines this caldera with the neighboring Kuju mountain group.
