Bialowieza National Park is a protected area in Podlaskie Voivodeship in eastern Poland, on the border with Belarus, established in 1932. It covers about 105 square kilometers and protects the best preserved section of the Bialowieza Forest, the last sizable fragment of the original lowland primeval forest that once covered much of Europe. The park holds the largest population of European bison anywhere, alongside wild boar, elk, wolves and lynx, and its strictly protected core has stood largely undisturbed for roughly 800 years. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, with the designation later extended.
