Booker T. Washington National Monument, near the community of Hardy in rural Franklin County, Virginia, preserves part of the 207 acre tobacco farm where educator and leader Booker T. Washington was born into slavery on April 5, 1856. The National Park Service manages the roughly 199 acre site, designated a national monument in 1956, which interprets the early life of Washington and the history of 1850s slavery and farming through reconstructed buildings, gardens, crafts, and farm animals. The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966 and the Virginia Landmarks Register in 1973.
