Central Island National Park protects a volcanic island in Lake Turkana, Kenya, nicknamed Crocodile Island and managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service, covering about 5 square kilometers. The island holds more than a dozen craters and cones, three of them filled by small lakes, built from basaltic rock rising as high as 550 meters above the surrounding lake, with fumarolic activity concentrated along the rim of the central crater and historical sulfur emissions recorded in the 1930s and in 1974. It is habitat for Nile crocodiles along with flamingos and other waterbirds, and forms part of the Lake Turkana National Parks UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 1997 and extended in 2001.
