Cinque Terre National Park, inducted as an Italian national park in 1999, lies in the province of La Spezia in Liguria, northern Italy, and at about 4,300 acres, roughly 38.60 square kilometers, is Italy's smallest national park, though also its most densely populated, with some 5,000 permanent residents. It encompasses the five cliffside towns of Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare, linked by footpaths, plus parts of the Levanto and La Spezia communes, and achieved UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 1997. As the first Italian park created specifically to safeguard a landscape largely shaped by human hands, it combines the preservation of a natural coastal setting with support for the sustainable tourism the local economy depends on.
