Devils Tower National Monument protects Devils Tower, a distinctive igneous rock monolith rising abruptly from the surrounding prairie and pine forest in northeastern Wyoming. Proclaimed by President Theodore Roosevelt on September 24, 1906, under the newly enacted Antiquities Act, it was the first area in the United States to be designated a national monument. The tower's fluted columns, formed as igneous rock cooled and cracked, rise high above the Belle Fourche River valley and hold deep spiritual significance for multiple Plains tribes, who know it by names including Bear Lodge. It is administered by the US National Park Service.
