Egmont National Park

Egmont National Park, also known by its Maori name Te Papakura o Taranaki, lies south of New Plymouth on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island. It was established in 1900 as the country's second national park, after Tongariro, protecting the dormant volcano Mount Taranaki along with the smaller cones of Pouakai and Kaitake. The park's temperate rainforest shelters threatened birds including the blue duck and North Island brown kiwi, and its high elevation Ahukawakawa Swamp holds rare species adapted to acidic soils. The park covers about 342 square kilometers and is managed by the Department of Conservation.
