Elk Island National Park

Elk Island National Park lies about 35 kilometers east of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It was established as a national park in 1913 after originally being set aside as Elk Park in 1906, and at about 194 square kilometers it is Canada's eighth smallest national park by area but its largest fully enclosed one, fenced to manage its wildlife populations. The park has played a major role in the conservation of plains bison and hosts the densest population of hoofed mammals of any park in Canada, including both the wood bison, North America's largest terrestrial mammal, and the pygmy shrew, its smallest.
