Gir National Park

Gir National Park, also called Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary or Sasan Gir, is a protected area in the Junagadh, Gir Somnath and Amreli districts of Gujarat, India, established in 1965 on land that was formerly the private hunting ground of the Nawab of Junagadh. It covers about 1,410 square kilometers in total, including a 259 square kilometer fully protected national park core, set within dry deciduous Khathiar-Gir forest. It is the only place in the world where the Asiatic lion survives in the wild, with a 2015 census counting 523 lions across the surrounding districts.
