Grand Canyon National Park is a national park of the United States in northwestern Arizona, protecting most of the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River. First given federal protection as a forest reserve in 1893 and as a national monument in 1908 under President Theodore Roosevelt, it was established as the 15th US national park on February 26, 1919. The park spans roughly 1,900 metres of elevation and several distinct ecosystems, and it is one of the most visited national parks in the United States, with the canyon itself exposing nearly two billion years of Earth's geological history in its layered rock walls.
