Guanacaste National Park (Costa Rica)

Guanacaste National Park, in northern Costa Rica, was created by executive decree in 1989, partly through the advocacy of ecologist Daniel Janzen, and formally established on July 9, 1991, covering about 340 square kilometers between the Orosi and Cacao volcanoes and the Interamerican Highway. The IUCN category II park forms part of the Area de Conservacion Guanacaste World Heritage Site and was designed as a corridor letting species migrate seasonally between dry forest and rain forest, sheltering some 140 mammal species, over 300 bird species, and more than 10,000 insect species. It also contains the El Pedregal archaeological site, with petroglyphs dated between 500 BC and 1500 AD.
