Hakusan National Park spans Fukui, Gifu, Ishikawa and Toyama prefectures in central Japan, gaining full national park status on November 12, 1962 after operating as a quasi-national park from 1955, and covering about 477 square kilometers. It centers on Mount Haku, with vegetation ranging from warm temperate forest at lower elevations to alpine landscape near the summit, and supports golden eagle, Japanese macaque, Asiatic black bear and Japanese serow. In 1980, a 480 square kilometer portion of the park was designated a UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Reserve.
