Hossa National Park was established on June 17, 2017, in the Hossa wilds of Suomussalmi in the Kainuu region of Finland, as the 40th national park in Finland, timed to coincide with the centenary of Finnish independence. It grew out of the Hossa Hiking Area, established in 1979 as the oldest official hiking area in Finland, and it protects the Varikallio rock paintings, among the northernmost known rock art sites in Finland, dated to roughly 1500 to 2500 BC.
