Hwange National Park is a national park in western Zimbabwe near the border with Botswana, established as a game reserve in 1928 on former royal hunting grounds and later designated a national park, becoming the largest protected area in the country. The park protects a landscape of Kalahari sand woodland, grassland and seasonal pans and is home to one of the largest elephant populations in Africa, alongside lion, buffalo and endangered African wild dog, with an extensive network of artificial waterholes helping sustain wildlife through the dry season. It is managed by the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority.
