Kalkalpen National Park, whose name translates literally as Limestone Alps National Park, lies within the Northern Limestone Alps in the state of Upper Austria. It was established in 1997. The ancient beech forests within the park were added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe, recognized for their undisturbed condition and their record of ecological history in Europe since the Last Glacial Period.
