Kuno National Park

Kuno National Park lies in the Sheopur and Shivpuri districts of Madhya Pradesh, India, in the Gwalior Chambal region, named for the Kuno river that runs through it; it was first protected as a wildlife sanctuary in 1981 and became a national park in 2018 across an expanded area of about 749 square kilometers of tropical dry deciduous forest and savanna grassland in the Khathiar Gir ecoregion. Its resident chital, sambar, nilgai, chinkara, leopards, sloth bears and dholes were joined beginning in September 2022 by African cheetahs translocated from Namibia, the first attempt to establish a free ranging cheetah population in India since the species was declared extinct there, and the eighteenth century Palpur fort stands within the core area of the park.
