Kushiro-Shitsugen National Park protects Japan's largest wetland in eastern Hokkaido, designated on July 31, 1987 and covering about 269 square kilometers. Its reedbeds and raised peat bogs line the Kushiro River and support more than 600 plant species, providing habitat for the endangered red-crowned crane along with huchen and Siberian salamander. Public access is strictly limited to protect the ecosystem.
