Lake Nakuru National Park was created in 1961 around Lake Nakuru in Kenya's Great Rift Valley, near Nakuru town about 164 kilometers north of Nairobi, protecting an alkaline lake that has ranged from 5 to 45 square kilometers and expanded to about 68 square kilometers between 2010 and 2020. The lake is renowned for flamingo flocks that have at times numbered in the millions, feeding on its abundant algae, and for more than 400 recorded bird species overall. The surrounding 188 square kilometer park held more than 25 eastern black rhinoceros and about 70 southern white rhinoceros as of 2009, along with Rothschild's giraffe, zebra, buffalo, leopard and lion, and in 2011 the lake was inscribed as part of the Kenya Lake System of the Great Rift Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site.
