Los Glaciares National Park is a national park in Santa Cruz Province in Argentine Patagonia, established in 1937 to protect a large section of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field and the glaciers that descend from it into two large glacial lakes, Lago Argentino and Lago Viedma. Its best known feature, the Perito Moreno Glacier, is one of the few glaciers in the world that remains in relative equilibrium rather than steadily retreating, periodically advancing far enough to dam and then dramatically rupture the adjoining lake arm. The park also protects the granite peaks of the Fitz Roy massif, a renowned destination for mountaineers, and it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981.
