Maiella National Park

Maiella National Park lies in the provinces of Chieti, Pescara and L'Aquila in the Abruzzo region of Italy, centered on the Maiella massif, whose highest peak, Monte Amaro, reaches 2,793 meters. Established in 1991, it is one of Italy's 24 national parks and one of three in Abruzzo, covering about 740.95 square kilometers. From 1998 to 2005 the mountain was the focus of a major international geoscientific research effort, TaskForceMajella, and hydrocarbon seepages and shallow wells along its northern slope have been exploited for thousands of years. On 21 April 2021 the park was declared a UNESCO Global Geopark under the name Majella Geopark.
