Mapungubwe National Park

Mapungubwe National Park lies in South Africa's Limpopo province near the town of Musina, at the meeting point of South Africa, Botswana, and Zimbabwe, and covers about 280 square kilometers. First protected in 1998 as Vhembe-Dongola National Park, it was renamed Mapungubwe National Park and formally opened in 2004, and its Iron Age landscape was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape in 2003. The park preserves Mapungubwe Hill, capital of the Iron Age Kingdom of Mapungubwe and the find site of the renowned Golden Rhinoceros figurine, alongside acacia and mopane woodland that supports 387 recorded bird species and functions as a lion conservation unit.
