Marakele National Park lies near the town of Thabazimbi in South Africa's Limpopo province, within the Waterberg Biosphere, and was established in 1994, covering about 670 square kilometers. Its landscape centers on the Waterberg massif and includes Waterberg moist bushveld, mixed bushveld, and the Apiesrivierpoort forest, home to all of the so called big five species after buffalo were reintroduced in 2013. The park hosts about 250 bird species and holds the largest colony of Cape vultures in the world, with around 800 breeding pairs.
