Monfragüe National Park

Monfragüe National Park sits in Caceres Province in Extremadura, western Spain, within a triangle formed by the towns of Plasencia, Trujillo, and Caceres. It had been protected at a lower level since 1979 before becoming a national park on March 2, 2007, and covers about 18,118 hectares classed under IUCN category II. The Tagus River cuts through the park's mountainous terrain, creating dramatic cliffs that shelter the world's largest colony of cinereous vultures, more than 300 breeding pairs, along with more than 15 other regularly breeding raptor species, making the park a major destination for birdwatchers. It drew about 331,788 visitors in 2008.
