Muir Woods National Monument protects old growth coast redwood forest on Mount Tamalpais near the Pacific coast in southwestern Marin County, California, within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area about 12 miles north of San Francisco. It was established on January 9, 1908, and is administered by the National Park Service. The monument covers 554 acres, of which 240 acres are old growth redwood stands, among the few such stands remaining in the San Francisco Bay Area. It is named for the naturalist John Muir. The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008 and drew roughly 799,000 visitors in 2022.
