Nelson Lakes National Park sits in the Tasman District of New Zealand's South Island, at the northern end of the Southern Alps near the city of Nelson. Established in 1956, it covers about 1,019 square kilometers of glacially carved lakes, beech forest, and snow covered mountains. The park protects threatened native birds such as kaka and kakariki, the rare Cupola gecko, and vulnerable species including the blue duck and South Island robin.
