Ogasawara National Park protects the Ogasawara, or Bonin, Islands roughly 1,000 kilometers south of Tokyo, Japan, designated on October 16, 1972 and covering about 66 square kilometers across the Chichijima, Hahajima and Mukojima island groups. The islands returned to Japanese administration in 1968 after a period of American occupation and were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011 for their exceptional biodiversity, including 441 recorded plant taxa and the critically endangered Bonin flying fox, the islands' only native mammal.
