Periyar National Park, also known as Periyar National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary, is a protected area in the Idukki and Pathanamthitta districts of Kerala, India, covering about 925 square kilometers, of which 350.54 square kilometers were designated as national park in 1982. It was originally established as the Nellikkampatty Game Sanctuary in 1934 and surrounds Periyar Lake, an artificial reservoir created by the Mullaperiyar Dam in 1895. The park is a major elephant and tiger reserve and forms the watershed for the Periyar and Pamba rivers.
