Purnululu National Park lies in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia, about 300 kilometers south of Kununurra. Established in 1987, it covers roughly 2,397 square kilometers and contains the Bungle Bungle Range, a formation of beehive-shaped sandstone towers up to 250 meters high, marked by distinctive black and orange bands produced by cyanobacteria that stabilize the ancient rock surface. UNESCO inscribed the park as a World Heritage Site in 2003 for these formations, which represent outstanding examples of cone karst shaped by roughly 20 million years of erosion.
