Pyhä-Häkki National Park

Pyhä-Häkki National Park protects old growth Scots pine and Norway spruce forest and extensive bogs in Saarijärvi, in the Central Finland region. Established in 1956 and extended in 1982 with the addition of the Kotaneva bog, the IUCN Category II park covers about 13 square kilometers and holds the largest remaining area of virgin forest in the southern half of Finland, with bog covering roughly half its area. Managed by Metsähallitus, the park recorded about 17,900 visitors in 2024; planning for its protection had begun in the late 1930s but was interrupted by the Second World War before its eventual establishment.
