Rakiura National Park

Rakiura National Park covers about 85 percent of Stewart Island, New Zealand's third largest island, and opened in 2002 as the country's newest national park at roughly 1,400 square kilometers. Formed from a network of former nature reserves, scenic reserves, and state forest, it excludes the township of Oban and some private and Maori owned land. The park is a stronghold for the Southern brown kiwi, or tokoeka, with an estimated population of around 15,000 birds, alongside yellow-eyed penguins, weka, and South Island kaka in its lowland forests of kamahi, totara, and rimu.
