Rapa Nui National Park

Rapa Nui National Park covers most of Easter Island in Chile, was established in 1935, protects about 6,800 hectares, and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 for its 887 surviving moai statues carved by the early Rapa Nui inhabitants of the island between about 300 and 1200 AD. Since December 1, 2017 the park has been administered by the indigenous Ma'u Henua community, the first arrangement under which park revenue is reinvested locally for conservation, and the park marks the easternmost cultural boundary of Polynesia, some 3,700 kilometers from mainland Chile.
