Rondane National Park

Rondane National Park, established on 21 December 1962, is Norway's oldest national park, created to safeguard its native plants, animal life and cultural heritage while securing the area as a recreational resource for future generations. Covering about 963 square kilometers, it contains ten peaks above 2,000 meters, the highest being Rondeslottet at 2,178 meters, along with u-shaped valleys, narrow lakes such as Rondvatnet, and ice age formations including the small canyon Jutulhogget. The park is an important refuge for wild mountain reindeer, with an estimated two to four thousand animals ranging across Rondane and the neighboring Dovre area, and its landscape helped inspire Henrik Ibsen's 1867 play Peer Gynt, which cemented Rondane's status as a symbol of Norway.
