Ruma National Park

Ruma National Park, near Homa Bay in Kenya's former Nyanza Province, began as the Lambwe Valley Game Reserve in 1966 and was gazetted as a national park in 1983, covering about 120 square kilometers as the only terrestrial national park in the region. It is known as the last retreat of the roan antelope, protecting Kenya's only wild population of the species, which numbers only around 40 individuals, alongside African leopard, Cape buffalo, Rothschild's giraffe and eastern black rhinoceros. More than 400 bird species have been recorded in the park, including the rare blue swallow, making it a designated Important Bird Area.
