Santa Rosa National Park, created by decree in 1966 in Guanacaste Province in northwestern Costa Rica, was originally established to protect the site of the 1856 Battle of Santa Rosa. The IUCN category II park, part of the Area de Conservacion Guanacaste World Heritage Site, covers about 390 square kilometers of land and a further 426 square kilometers of marine area near the town of La Cruz, encompassing ten distinct habitats from savanna and deciduous forest to marshland and mangrove. It supports roughly 250 bird species and 115 mammal species and includes two Ramsar listed wetlands, Laguna Respringue and the Manglar de Potrero Grande.
