Sarek National Park

Sarek National Park lies in Jokkmokk Municipality in Swedish Lapland, north of the Arctic Circle, and was established in 1909 as one of nine national parks created that year, making it and its siblings the first national parks in Europe. Covering about 1,970 square kilometers, it holds six of Sweden's thirteen peaks above 2,000 meters, including Sarektjakka, the country's second highest mountain, along with roughly 100 glaciers, deep valleys and high plateaus, and it carries IUCN Category II protection as a national park. The park is traditional reindeer herding territory for the Sami people and contains sites of importance to them, and since 1996 it has formed part of the Laponian Area UNESCO World Heritage Site.
