Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park is a national park covering the German Wadden Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein, established by the Schleswig-Holstein state parliament on October 1, 1985 and significantly expanded in 1999. It extends from the German-Danish maritime border south to the Elbe estuary, taking in mudflats around geest and marsh islands and the undyked Halligen islands, with tidal flats reaching up to 40 kilometers wide. The park supports large numbers of harbor porpoises, shelducks and eelgrass beds. It has held UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status since 1990, and on June 26, 2009 it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its largely undisturbed intertidal ecosystem and unique biodiversity, together with the neighboring Lower Saxon and Dutch Wadden Sea areas.
