Serengeti National Park is a large national park in northern Tanzania that stretches over roughly 14,763 square kilometres, first given partial protection in 1940 and established in its modern form in 1951. It is renowned for hosting the largest terrestrial mammal migration on Earth, in which more than a million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra move in an annual circuit following the rains, and it is managed by the Tanzania National Parks Authority. The park was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981 under both natural criteria for its exceptional natural beauty and its outstanding ecological processes.
