Setonaikai National Park protects Japan's Seto Inland Sea and ten bordering prefectures, first designated in 1934 as the country's first national park and greatly expanded in 1950, covering about 669 square kilometers across roughly 3,000 islands. It includes the UNESCO World Heritage Itsukushima Shrine and the Naruto whirlpools, and its water quality has recovered since the 1980s following industrial pollution during Japan's postwar economic boom.
