Silent Valley National Park is a national park in Kerala, India, in the Nilgiri hills, with a core area of about 90 square kilometers surrounded by a 148 square kilometer buffer zone spanning parts of Palakkad and Malappuram districts in Kerala and the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu. First explored by the botanist Robert Wight in 1847, it preserves one of the last undisturbed tracts of South Western Ghats mountain rainforest and tropical moist evergreen forest, and its establishment in 1984 followed the Save Silent Valley environmental movement of the 1970s, which stopped a proposed hydroelectric dam on the Kunthipuzha River. It forms part of both the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and the Western Ghats World Heritage Site.
