Simien Mountains National Park is a national park in the Amhara Region of northern Ethiopia, established in 1969 to protect a dramatic landscape of jagged peaks, deep valleys and sheer escarpments formed by erosion on the Ethiopian Highlands, including Ras Dashen, the highest peak in Ethiopia. The park is a stronghold for several species found nowhere else on Earth, including the gelada, a grass-grazing primate that lives in large troops on the mountain grasslands, the Walia ibex, and the Ethiopian wolf. It was among the first sites inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978, and it was placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger from 1996 to 2017 due to population encroachment and habitat loss before its status was fully restored.
